Cultivating a bonsai tree takes a lot of effort on the part of the gardener. You will need bonsai tools, some of which are specifically for bonsai gardening and others which can be used for any type of gardening activity. There are not that many tools made specifically for bonsai use. In fact, there are many tools that you can modify or use instead of buying bonsai tools for your gardening efforts.
Shears and Cutters
There are many different kinds of shears available for pruning and cutting. These kinds of bonsai tools are necessary for the gardener to be able to manage and control the growth of the bonsai tree. The larger the shears, the more capacity to cut bigger branches from the bonsai, but bigger shears will not be able to fit into tiny places between trunks and branches.
Cutters, on the other hand, are necessary for cutting tough branches. This type of bonsai tool can be interchanged with shears for many purposes but there are a few in which only the cutter or shear will do. Flush cuts will need the help of a concave cutter rather than shears. Other kinds of bonsai tool cutters include spherical cutters for cuts to be made closer to the trunk. These kinds of cutters have better scarring control.
Wire Cutters and Pliers
These two bonsai tools are necessary for training the bonsai into different styles and poses. Both tools can actually cut wire but the wire cutter has a larger range while the pliers can be used to shape and manipulate the wires to train the branches. These are necessary bonsai tools and supplies that can also be used outside of bonsai gardening.
Trunk Splitters and Root Cutters
These two bonsai tools are more specifically geared towards bonsai gardening, especially the trunk splitter. Trunk splitters are used to design the bonsai especially for poses that necessitate clearing of the trunk.
Other Bonsai Tools
Branch benders, leaf trimmers, saws, jin tools and picks are bonsai tools that are also needed to make a beautiful piece of art from indoor bonsai trees. Branch benders are used to cultivate branches to any form while leaf trimmers are for snipping small leaves and buds. Saws are for branches that cannot be cut by cutters and picks are for picking off the soil from the roots. Jin bonsai tools are used to fashion the bark of the bonsai tree for a more antique or weathered look.
